Gobal action day for Honduras in Amsterdam
Worldwide demonstrations out of Solidarity with People in Honduras
The worldwide organisation ‘Via Campesina’ calls for an international expression of solidarity with the Hondurian people on 11 August 2009. The Dutch civil organisations TNI, FOEI, TIE-Netherlands, OLAA , Amnesty International Netherlands, XminY, Casa Migrante, Circulo Bolivariano, Ojala, Cordaid, Hivos, FIAN-NL and ICCO support this solidarity action and came together at the Dam Square in Amsterdam.
The coup in Honduras of 28 June has been rejected internationally, by among others the Organisation of the American States (OAS) and theEuropean Union (EU). The EU has frozen development aid to Honduras. Since the coup, human rights organisations in Honduras have been searching for the recovery of democracy, in which also the poor and the excluded have something to say about their own life and future. However, these organisations have dealt with various difficulties.
Protests in Honduras have been put down, sometimes with violence. They are daily facing repression and intimidation. Media have been stopped. Members of our colleague organisations have been arrested, intimidated and prosecuted. This makes it impossible for these organisations to continue their work. These developments are to regret and are unacceptable. They are against the Universal Human Rights, according to various civil organisations in the Netherlands who work in Central America and Honduras.
On 11 August 2009, people from all corners of Honduras will go to the two most important cities to protest. The population daily demonstrates since the coup on 28 June.
The Dutch civil organisations will show their support to their colleague organisations in Honduras and the people in Honduras.
