Source : Gender Action - Gender Action announces the publication of its fourth “Gender Action Link”, Gender, the IFIs and Debt, which highlights how International Financial Institution debt exacerbates the feminization of poverty and undermines gender equality. The Link specifically examines typical gender impacts of IFI loan conditions on female workers such as an increase in the amount of care-work for women and the exclusion of poor women and girls from essential health services.
The Link presents the case of Malawi, where World Bank and IMF loan and debt conditions disproportionately affected women throughout the country. Additionally, the Link provides resources and suggestions on what can be done to address IFI debt which continuously harms low-income countries.
This brief, reader-friendly resource is part of a new series of Gender Action Links that have included Links on gender, international finance and climate change; extractive industries; and commercial banks. Future Links will address topics such as indigenous rights, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and more. This timely series aims to link international finance-watcher and gender justice communities through key thematic briefings, concrete case examples, useful action resources and partnership opportunities. Gender Action Links link up gender justice groups and international finance-watchers so we can multiply our impact!
